The first Eritrean Bishop Abune Kidanemariam was elected for the Geez Rite in Eritrea. |

Apostolic Visitor Mons. Ludovico Mathias came to Eritrea and designated two Vicar Delegates: Abba Abraha for the Exarchate of Asmara, and Abba Tesfaghiorghis Tigiar for Keren. |

The Vicar Delegate was supplanted by the Vicar General. |

Eritrea became an independent state. |
